Milepost 11: Heavenly Worship

Primary References: Revelation 4:2-11

After the rapture, the first thing John sees is a glorious vision of God on His throne in all His majesty, sovereignty, and power. Most commentators identify Jesus as the one sitting on the throne but Revelation 5:7 creates problems for this interpretation when Jesus, the Lamb, takes a book from the one on the throne. As soon as the beasts finish, the twenty-four elders, representing all of the righteous in heaven, fall down before God Almighty and worship Him by casting their crowns before His throne and saying that the Lord is worthy to receive glory, honor, and power. They throw their crowns at the feet of God Almighty because He has made them worthy and all praise for them is due to God. Where the beasts give God thanks, the elders proclaim His worthiness for power. The elders then acknowledge that God has made all things for His pleasure

If He takes the book from the one on the throne, then someone else must be sitting on it. This leaves God the Father as the most likely occupant of the throne. In both Revelation 6:16 and 7:9, there are two different entities: the one on the throne and the Lamb. These descriptions are consistent with this vision and do not change until Revelation 21-22 when the throne is the habitation of both God the Father and the Lamb.

Beast's praise God. One of the praises is ‘Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty'. Why are there three ‘Holies'? Many suggest this is simple emphasis of God's holiness. More likely, it is confirmation of the presence of each member of the Holy Trinity. So far, the scene before the throne has revealed the Father and the Holy Spirit. As mentioned, the Lamb of God, Jesus, reveals Himself shortly. The throngs in heaven praise each member of the Godhead individually and collectively as God Almighty. They praise Him for His eternal existence - past, present, and future - and give Him glory, honor, and thanks.
