Milepost 13: The Four Horsemen

Primary References: Revelation 6:1-8

Now possessing the sealed book, Jesus starts triggering tribulation's initial events by breaking the book's seals. The first four seals introduce four horsemen, who, collectively known as the four horsemen of the apocalypse, spread misery and death worldwide. These famous horsemen are common subjects of apocalyptic artwork and most tribulation pictures contain some version of them. Each of these seals introduces one of these riders who rides a differently colored horse and brings a different judgment:

Horseman 1: rides a white horse and introduces the son of Perdition, also known as THE ANTICHRIST

Horseman 2: rides a red horse and brings war

Horseman 3: rides a black horse and brings famine

Horseman 4: rides a pale horse and brings death

Their work starts at the advent of the tribulation and continues until Jesus' return. Riding throughout the earth, they take God's judgment everywhere they go until a quarter of the world's population lay dead.

Zechariah 6:1-8 paints a similar image of judgment spreading via horses and their handlers:

And I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of brass. In the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black horses; And in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot grisled and bay horses. Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me, What are these, my lord? And the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth. The black horses which are therein go forth into the north country; and the white go forth after them; and the grisled go forth toward the south country. And the bay went forth, and sought to go that they might walk to and fro through the earth: and he said, Get you hence, walk to and fro through the earth. So they walked to and fro through the earth. Then cried he upon me, and spake unto me, saying, Behold, these that go toward the north country have quieted my spirit in the north country.

These horses drag their chariots throughout the earth in specific directions; and like Revelation's riders, they eventually span the entire earth. Zechariah's horses leave from mountains of brass, which foreshadows the unnamed judgments they take with them. Zechariah's horses and Revelation riders are so similar yet remarkably different that their comparison naturally sparks scholarly debate. Despite this, it is difficult to ignore the strong parallels of four sets of differently colored horses traveling throughout the entire earth to execute judgments.
