Exposition: Jesus Prepares for War

Primary References: Revelation 19:11-16

The scene in heaven quickly moves from the celebration of the marriage to preparation for war, afterall it is almost time to rescue Jerusalem’s defenders. Now, John sees the leader of the heavenly armies and identifies Him as:

  • Faithful
  • True
  • A name written, that no man knew, but He Himself
  • The Word of God
  • KING OF KINGS
  • LORD OF LORDS

This is the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ whom Revelation 17:14 calls Faithful, King of Kings and Lord of Lords. John 1 calls Him the Word of God and in Revelation 3:7, He calls Himself True. These titles clearly identify the rider on the horse as Jesus Christ. In Revelation 1, His names (Alpha and Omega, First and Last) reflected His divinity. Now His names reflect His Lordship. The reign of humanity is ending!

John sees Jesus’ clothing dipped in blood. Some suggest this represents the redemptive blood of Christ but John does not tell how he knows Jesus’ clothing was dipped in blood. If dipped in His blood, then the white garment remains white and no evidence of the dipping would exist. Additionally, Jesus and His clothing have no need of purification or cleansing from sin so it is unlikely He would waste His own precious blood on Himself. An alternative view is that this is the blood from the winepress of God’s wrath. Isaiah 63:1-3 shows Jesus in red clothing after treading the winepress of God’s wrath. Then, He is wearing the same garments but they have become stained red by the blood of those crushed in the winepress. In heaven, Jesus’ garments are only dipped with this blood. Soon, this blood saturates them as Jesus immerses Himself in treading God’s winepress.

The titles on Jesus’ garments remove any questions about His authority. In Luke 12:13-14, people wanted Jesus to act as judge:

And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

Jesus’ response cut to the heart of authority. There were properly appointed judges for such matters, and Jesus was not one of them. In His first coming, Jesus came as a servant but now He returns with the full and complete authority of the rightful heir to the earth and the duly crowned King of all. He now has final authority over everything and is judge over all.
