Milepost 58: God’s supper

Primary References: Revelation 19:17-18

Now on earth, God’s supper is about to be served. He has also specially prepared it for His guests: all of the earth’s birds. An angel standing in the sun invites these guests while God compels the source of their feast, the world’s armies, to come to their slaughter. People from every ethnic group and every walk of life (great or small, bond (slave) or free) are served at this supper. God’s supper is a vengeful feast where the guests are birds who eat the meat of men and horses of rebellious armies. The following table summarizes the striking contrast between the Lamb’s marriage supper and God’s supper.

Ezekiel 39:17-20 expands on several aspects of God’s supper. Every beast of the field also joins the birds in enjoying the feast as God apparently sends invitations to all wild creatures except those living in water. These guests thoroughly enjoy themselves as the supper’s pleasures overcome them. Beasts suffer from gluttony and the intoxicating effects of the juices coming from the winepress of God’s wrath. It is probably good that these beasts enjoy themselves since it may be the last time that any of them will ever taste meat or blood. During Jesus’ reign, their diets are changed and they no longer kill each other and this supper may end the carnivorous diets of birds and beasts. Ezekiel also expands Revelation’s list of domesticated animals served by God. Where Revelation lists only horses, Ezekiel adds rams, lambs, goats, and bullocks.

Comparison: Lamb’s Marriage Supper versus God’s Supper

As has been the case so often, the angel calling the guests to God’s supper is unidentified. Many have suggested that he is the same angel as the Mighty Angel in Revelation 5, 10 and 18 (verse 21). This is a possibility but seems unlikely since an adjective like mighty is missing. Possibly, it is simply one of God’s legions of angels. [1]

[1] If this is the Angel of the Lord, then each personage of the Holy Trinity hosts a different feast during this period. God the Father hosted the marriage supper of the Lamb, the Holy Spirit hosts God’s supper, and Jesus hosts the King’s feast at the beginning of His millennial reign.
