Milepost 73: Jesus’ Thousand Year Reign

Primary References: Revelation 20:6

It is fair to say that anyone surviving until now is truly one of Daniel’s blessed ones (Daniel 12:12). Unparalleled peace and prosperity throughout the earth distinguish the rest of Jesus’ reign. The Bible disperses so many blessings and descriptions about this time throughout its pages that it is surprising that Revelation gives so few details. Elsewhere, the Bible describes:

  • The distinctive characteristics of Jesus’ reign
  • The earth during the thousand years
  • The blessings on Jerusalem
  • Israel’s behavior and blessings
  • The gentile nations behavior and relationship to Israel

Jesus now has total dominion over the earth including all people, nations, lands, and animals.

He ushers in a time of total peace through the judgment of nations and people and He punishes many nations and many people (Isaiah 2:4, Micah 4:3, Jeremiah 3:17). Psalms 72 is a key passage to understanding His reign. The righteous judgments of the King are a central theme of this Psalm. He protects the poor, the needy, and the meek from the deceitful and violent. No more, will there be reports of scam artists taking every penny from the elderly. The abuse of poor immigrants ends. Bullies no longer extort by force from the helpless. Any who take advantage of the widow, the fatherless, the poor, the helpless, or the needy will suffer sure and swift punishment. Jesus and His rulers do not tolerate these actions and these crimes virtually disappear. (See also Isaiah 11:4)

Jesus is now exalted and sanctified above all else (Ezekiel 36:23). His enemies lick the dust of the earth (perhaps an indication of their death or them lying down prostrate on the earth giving homage to Jesus) and nomads in the wilderness bow down in worship. Most importantly, God’s promised end of striving with humanity (Genesis 6:3) is coming to fruition. Kings bring offerings and tributes while people give Him the praises and respect fitting the greatest King ever. All nations including Tarshish, the nations of the isles, Sheba, and Seba bring Him gifts. He changes bad things into good: ashes into beauty, mourning into oil of joy, and the spirit of heaviness into the garment of praise (Isaiah 61:3).

In short, the millennial reign is a glorious time to be alive. For a thousand years, people enjoy long life, prosperity, peace, abundant joy, and health. The knowledge of God fills the earth and God’s blessings flow freely from Jesus’ throne on mount Zion, to Jerusalem, to Israel, and throughout the earth. Sin is almost non-existent and its ravages no longer plague men.
