Milepost 74: Third Temple Built

Primary References: Ezekiel 40-48

The Bible records the construction of two prior temples: Solomon and Ezra’s. The glory of God (also known as the Shekinah glory) filled the first but was apparently absent from the second. Both temples suffered through periods of neglect, which necessitated substantial repairs and reconstruction. None of these cycles of neglect was so deep that the existing structure disappeared and consequently, none of the reconstruction efforts was sufficiently comprehensive to qualify as a new temple. Babylon destroyed Solomon’s temple and the Romans destroyed Ezra’s temple (as rebuilt by Herod) in the dispersion of the Jews in 72 A.D. Jeremiah suggests there are three temples when he told the Jews not to place their faith in the temples (Jeremiah 7:4). With two temples already built and destroyed, the only temple remaining is the one that Zechariah proclaims Jesus builds (Zechariah 6:12-13).

This last temple is Jesus’ throne on earth, which He utilizes to serve as both High Priest and King of Kings. As Solomon used the best available labor and material from many countries to construct the first temple, Jesus does the same for His temple, the seat of final authority for all of earth’s spiritual and governmental matters (Zechariah 6:15). This temple is by far the most glorious of the three. Jesus’ presence fills this temple with the glory of God, His glory. His glory overflows from the temple to fill the whole earth (Ezekiel 43:1-5, 44:4). This temple never suffers neglect or requires rebuilding; it stands until the earth’s destruction at the end of Jesus’ reign. People from all over the earth flock to it and bring their offerings (Isaiah 66:20-21). People come to the temple to worship on the Sabbath, new moons, and feasts (Ezekiel 45:21-25, 46:1). Ezekiel provides extensive descriptions of Jesus’ temple in Ezekiel 40-48.
