Milepost 18: The First Trumpet

Primary References: Revelation 8:7

When the first angel blows his trumpet, hail and fire mingled with blood rain onto the earth, devastating and destroying a third of all plant life. This cryptic description might be the debris from volcanic eruptions raining down from the sky with the burning volcanic rock looking like hail and destroying vegetation. The allusion to blood may refer to the blood from the animals and people it kills. A volcanic eruption large enough to destroy a third of the plant life could be a contributory factor to the fourth trumpet's darkening of the skies.

This first trumpet bears a strong resemblance to Moses' seventh plague where God rained hail mingled with fire on the Egyptians:

And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch forth thine hand toward heaven, that there may be hail in all the land of Egypt, upon man, and upon beast, and upon every herb of the field, throughout the land of Egypt. And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven: and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and the fire ran along upon the ground; and the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt. So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, very grievous, such as there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. (Exodus 9:22-24)

Prior to the plague, Moses warned people to protect themselves and their animals:

Send therefore now, and gather thy cattle, and all that thou hast in the field; for upon every man and beast which shall be found in the field, and shall not be brought home, the hail shall come down upon them, and they shall die. He that feared the word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattle flee into the houses: And he that regarded not the word of the LORD left his servants and his cattle in the field. (Exodus 9:19-21)

God-fearing people took actions to protect themselves, their families, and their beasts. Those who did not, suffered potentially catastrophic loses. Exodus 9:25 shows the results of this plague:

And the hail smote throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the hail smote every herb of the field, and brake every tree of the field.

This plague features many of the same elements of Revelation's first trumpet judgment including hail and fire burning up green grass and trees. The blood mingled with the hail and fire may come from the same source as Moses' seventh plague. During the tribulation, two witnesses like Elijah and Moses minister as they did in the Old Testament. Perhaps Moses, or a successor, once again warns those who fear God to take protective action before this judgment comes.
